In the Garden: Day 15 of Lent

7 He came and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep awake one hour? 38 Keep awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. 40 And once more he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to say to him.

Mark 14:37-40

Also Matthew 26:40-43.

Waken your church, Lord!

We cry to you to rouse yourself

– “Arm of the Lord, awake!”

We urge you to do something

about the mess we’ve gotten ourselves into.

and all the time

it is we who are asleep!

We don’t take your warnings to heart; we don’t really take your promises to heart;

we say, “Lord, Lord” and don’t do what you say.

Have mercy on us;

Waken us to love;

Help us to see what you have already done about the mess that we are in

and help us to recognize what you are doing now, in the world today,.

and stir ourselves to work with you.

Waken us to love!
