Table Talk: 2nd Sunday of Lent

31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place.

35 like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 Every day he was teaching in the temple, and at night he would go out and spend the night on the Mount of Olives, as it was called. 38 And all the people would get up early in the morning to listen to him in the temple.

Luke 22:31-32;35-38

After singing the Passover hymn, they went out to the mount of Olives.

Mark 14:26

In the long Seder of Passover there would be much more “table talk.” John 14 to 17 relates to that, but needs special study, considering John’s style and method.

This precious meal with many conversations is coming to an end;

the ominous darkness closes round and you begin to warn them.

but they didn’t understand, did they, Lord?

Still talking about swords,

after all this time with you

– and your teaching of nonviolence!

Simply mention the word sword and the old ingrained ideas come quickly to the surface.

Such shallow grasp of what you teach is more than disappointing.

But I don’t really understand either. … perhaps I don’t want to.

Indoctrinated prejudice and childhood hates are slow to yield to you.

Let your love reach to the heart of me

-and change me, Lord.

Like Simon I am sifted;

sometimes my faith is shredded!

Pray for ME, Lord

I want to help my brothers,

but I need your love to strengthen me.
