Secrets: Day 4 of Lent
2 On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, his disciples said to him, “Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?” 13 So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him, 14 and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks, Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.” 16 So the disciples set out and went to the city, and found everything as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.

PASSOVER DATE. Any composite gospel such as this will present problems trying to reconcile contradictory accounts, dates, and events. For instance, there is clear disagreement between John and the other three Gospels on the actual day of Passover (14th Nisan) that year. Mark (14:12), Matthew, and Luke set the Passover on the Thursday evening-with the lambs being slaughtered that afternoon; but John sets the Passover as beginning at sunset on the Friday-and the death of Jesus (whom John has always presented as the “Lamb of God”) coinciding with the killing of the lambs. In that case the meal in the upper room would be on the eve of Passover. Who is right and how much they were each influenced by their own theological stance is open for discussion. What is clear is that their accounts are enriched rather than confused by their shaping of historical events in the light of their faith.
That was all very secret, Lord!
Real “cloak-and-dagger” stuff:
secret signs and signals, and a secret house, and nobody knowing where.
Was it all simply to make sure that you were not disturbed by the police?
So that no one could betray you till you were ready?
Is what you wanted to say and do with your friends
so very important that it must not be interrupted?
When we come to your table, help us to take to heart what you say and treasure all your secret meanings.
Make what you say and do at your table most important for me, in the secret places of my heart.
